From the Beekeeper



My interest in bees began as a school project over 20 years ago. Since that time I have maintained an intense fascination in bees and their environment. My involvement in King Island Honey began in 2007

Beekeeping on King Island involves a unique set of challenges and opportunities compared with beekeeping on mainland Australia or mainland Tasmania. Firstly the weather, King Island has a cool Mediterranean type climate with a wet winter and spring and dry summer. Wet springs interfere with the bees ability to build bee numbers to take advantage of summer flowers, dry summers limit the nectar production of the leading summer flowers for bees. Secondly, the flora resources on King Island are limited, just 2 types of plants provide over 80% of King Island's honey, Manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium) and Clover (White, Balansa, Arrow Leaf and Strawberry) Being on an island means we are unable to move bees to capture other honey flows. We can therefore state without doubt that our honey is 100% King Island.

Despite the limitations of King Island, we have found that by doing things a little differently we can produce some exceptional honey. Being so isolated keeps King Island free of bee diseases that plague other areas, we are therefore able to keep our bees without chemical or antibiotic treatments. We also keep our bees in the same place, this eliminates the stress caused to bees (and beekeeper) from constant travel from site to site.

Our bees exist in perfect harmony with King Island's world famous beef and dairy industries, the most valuable plants for livestock require bee pollination to regenerate.
